Abstract a full review of the 79 ce plinian eruption of vesuvius is presented through a multidisciplinary approach, exploiting the integration of historical, stratigraphic, sedimentological, petrological, geophysical, paleoclimatic, and modelling studies dedicated to this famous and devastating natural event. Well established eruption styles from hawaiian to plinian reflect an increase in magnitude and intensity of the related eruptions although they can only be related to the specific phases or styles that form. Ultimately, these conditions contributed to the production of this highly hazardous plinian eruption of masaya.

Sources from the time tell us that volcanic ash from the eruption travelled thousands of kilometres and that associated hazards may have caused several thousand fatalities.
We present the sequence of this plinian event based on a geological survey of the eruption products and analysis of satellite images.
Current classification and nomenclature of explosive eruption styles is based on monitored parameters or deposit characteristics, mostly related to eruptions that produce fallout deposits
