By default they remove whitespace characters (space, tabs, linebreaks, etc) Maybe your application cannot be reduced any further without code changes. Without strip (), bananas is present in the dictionary but with an empty string as value

I know.strip() returns a copy of the string in which all chars have been stripped from the beginning and the end of the string But i wonder why / if it is necessary.
